
Police refused to say whether she was among the injured, however they confirmed she remained in police custody on Thursday night. The Land Rover was removed from the scene by police on Thursday evening, while the cordon outside the school was reduced, allowing more access to Wimbledon Common.

The powerful automatic Land Rover mounted the pavement before crashing through a wooden fence, ploughing through the grounds and coming to rest against a school building. There were initial reports the driver may have suffered a medical incident before the crash but, after a brief hospital check up as a precaution, she was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.ĭetectives were understood to be examining the woman’s mobile phone and were also trying to ascertain whether the 4x4 had been speeding before the crash. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the driver of the Land Rover, a woman in her 40s, had been arrested at the scene and was being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.


In an emotional press conference given outside the school, Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, from Scotland Yard, fought back tears as she confirmed that one eight-year-old girl had lost her life.
